The University is named after Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov (1829-1905) – an outstanding Russian physiologist, biologist and chemist.

The University teaching staff
The University has top rank academic staff. More than 85% of the University teaching staff have degrees of doctor and candidate of science. High professionalism of the staff provides fundamental theoretical knowledge in medicine and allows students to obtain a level of knowledge that meets modern world requirements.
Specialists of the Sechenov University are members of more than 100 international scientific and professional societies and associations. More than 140 specialists are members of various international medical scientific organizations.
Annually the University sends more than 300 employees to foreign countries and accepts about 100 foreign specialists who give guest lectures, master classes and seminars. Thanks to this, an active dialogue with foreign colleagues is constantly developing, experience exchange is taking place, new methods and practices of treatment are being studied.
An example of this activity is a unique event: in the summer of 2017, the Sechenov International Biomedical Summit 2017 was held at the University with the participation of Nobel laureates Abram Hershko and Ada Jonath, as well as Russian and foreign experts of the world level in the field of biomedicine.
International cooperation
Sechenov University was one of the first in Russia to start the admission of foreign citizens in 1949. Currently, about 20% of the University students are foreign citizens. The University ranks 1 in terms of the number of international students among medical universities in Russia. Today, 2200 international students from 75 countries of the world study here.
In 2017 there was the largest graduation of international students in the history of the University - 357 students from 35 countries received diplomas. Malaysian students took the lead of the list - 219 people. It should be noted that 222 graduates from the total number studied in English. Training of international medical students is a priority area of activity of the University.
The university offers a full educational cycle to foreign students. One can start the education at the University with the preparatory faculty (1 academic year), which will help to improve the school level of education up to the required for admission and mastering university education (basic programs), to learn the Russian language and specific medical subjects - biology, chemistry, physics. Further, the student can be admitted to the chosen main educational program (in Russian or in English). A graduate of the University can continue his studies and receive a postgraduate education (clinical residency and PhD) in more than 100 specialties.
The University implements master's joint degree programs: Russia - Germany (Steinbeis Transfer Institute Biotechnology in Interdisciplinary Dentistry, Stuttgart); Russia - the Irish Republic (Hibernia College, Dublin); Russia - China (Harbin Medical University), Russia - Bulgaria (Medical University, Varna).
Sechenov University cooperates with universities and organizations from 70 countries - Vietnam, Germany, Israel, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Serbia, Slovenia, the USA, France, Japan and CIS countries; it is a co-organizer of the Russian-Chinese Association of Medical Universities.
For many years the University has been maintaining stable partnership links with many foreign educational, scientific and medical institutions, international and national organizations, societies, associations. They include the World Federation of International Education; Association of University Programs for Health Management; World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Associations of General Practitioners; European Association for Health Management; World Organization for Medical Law; International Science and Technology Center.
Fruitful multi-level cooperation allows the University specialists and their foreign colleagues to work together on various kinds of projects in education, science and research.
Study and Practice
Sechenov University prepares high-class general practitioners, specialty doctors and health professionals. Effective education organized in the University is achieved due to the highest professionalism of the teaching staff and the unique university facilities and infrastructure.
Consolidation of theoretical knowledge and acquisition of practical skills is carried out on the basis of seven University clinical hospitals. The University also has 20 academic and medical buildings and 16 interclinical medical and diagnostic services.
Medical students are in direct interaction with patients. Annually over 62,000 patients receive inpatient care and more than 300,000 - outpatient care at the University clinics. All this allows them to get a great professional practice in the years of training.
The structure of Sechenov University includes 7 research institutes, which expands educational opportunities for students and allows them to find their own professional direction in medicine.
These days the University has a large computer park, multimedia complexes for providing lecture classes, Internet halls, virtual operating rooms and laboratories.
The University is improving the range of e-learning, which is designed to significantly optimize the education. It includes: remote case studies, web technologies, virtual reading rooms. All students have access to a unique fund of the scientific and medical library, which became the basis of the first in Russia Federal Electronic Medical Library.
In the University there is a center "Medicine of the Future" (since 2011), its activities are focused on scientific research. Students interested in professional research, can study on the basis of the Center and get the European Diploma Supplement at the end. This document, developed and approved by the European Commission, UNESCO and the Council of Europe, simplifies the process of confirming graduates' certificates of education abroad.

The University pays great attention to student exchange programs with foreign partner universities and organizes internships through various international links. Students have the opportunity to take short-term training in more than 100 partner universities.
Students, residents and PhD students of the University undergo training and scientific internships in leading educational and scientific institutions in the United Kingdom, the USA, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Israel, Norway, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, Serbia and Montenegro. Students regularly participate in international conferences, symposia and seminars; they conduct scientific work and exchange research experience.
The University is a member of many educational programs such as Global Education, Erasmus + and the President's Program to study abroad.
The University has a unique Botanical Garden, which has a rich collection of rare plants, which also allows students to expand their professional horizons. There is a museum of the history of medicine with an interesting and substantial exposition.
Practice is the most important activity for a student of any medical area. A unique Center for Practical Skills created in the University is aimed at developing and improving professional medical knowledge.
The Training Center has the most modern models (phantoms) and innovative simulators for drilling medical manipulations. Training on simulators makes it possible to simulate situations, as close as possible to real clinical ones, and to work out the action algorithms. Specialized simulators allow to continually repeat medical actions, which makes it possible to develop skills; they allow to work out coordinated teamwork of doctors; they allow to train and maintain the skills of professional physicians in rare and difficult situations.
The most important principle of education at Sechenov University is the integration of fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical medical skills.
Sechenov University was originally built as a clinical complex, which combined theory and practice. It was created in 1897 and at that time was considered one of the best in the world. Today, its recognition and traditions are preserved.
Today it is a unique architectural complex, a well-known monument of the history of medicine, and a unique modern scientific and educational center where at the same time future doctors are trained, graduates improve their qualifications, research goes on and patients with complex diagnoses are provided assistance.
